Monje said, “I thought that that was it for me. I thought, ‘Wow, maybe I have like a year or two. Who knows.'”
The American Association for Cancer Research described that Monje, a resident of Philadelphia, is a part of this disturbing trend of young people diagnosed with cancer.
Dr. Patricia LoRusso, president of the American Association for Cancer Research, stated, “We don’t understand, and we’re trying to better understand, but it’s going to take research. And so that’s our concern,” CBS News reported.
What more are the experts stating?
As per LoRusso, research on the subject relies on money, and in the present year, there has been a cutback in funding related to cancer.
LoRusso said, “Because of its complexity, it takes an enormous amount of research to unveil the biology, which is needed to be able to then advance into new treatments.”
“We can’t get those new treatments without clinical and basic and translational research,” LoRusso added.
As per the reports, research has become a significant part of Monje’s life, and a part of a clinical trial testing a new treatment.
Monje said, “It targets this really specific little thing in all of my cells,” CBS News reported.
Moreover, Monje hopes that investigational therapy will be a lifesaver, which will bring hope and alternatives to better treatment for future patients.
Monje added, “Indispensable added benefit of knowing that this is gonna contribute to other people’s, you know, potential healing. It’s not just about me when I go into this clinical trial,” and, “It’s about all the other people that are gonna come after me.”
As per the scientists, obesity, alcohol intake, and environmental reasons are the causing factors bringing concern for the rising cancer rates aming young people.
