Doctors are now urged to consider low iron levels as a potential indicator of serious health issues in young people, as rising death rates have been linked to iron deficiency.
United States: Concerning findings have urged doctors to consider low iron levels as markers of colon cancer in youngsters.
More about the news
CDC statistics suggest that death rates from the disease have risen to just under 1 percent in Americans between the ages of 20 and 54 since 2005.
It discovered that mortality was even higher among young people whose tumors are usually diagnosed at a later stage, possibly because physicians do not consider cancer as a possible condition.
The authors of the report are now asking physicians to have a ‘low clinical suspicion’ of young persons who experience an alteration in their bowel movements, bleeding, or iron deficiency, DailyMail reported.
Poor intake of iron leads to anemia, a state in which the body lacks enough wholesome red blood cells to transport oxygen.
As stated in the Journal of the American Medical Association, in 2024, about 30 percent of adults might experience some degree of iron deficiency.
What more did experts indicate?
According to data for the British population, three percent of men and eight percent of women indicate an iron deficiency.
Mild symptoms of anemia include feeling tired, weak or faint, pale skin, cold skin, icy, numb or cramped, headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, ringing in the ears, sore throat, a burning sensation in the tongue, fast or irregular heartbeat, and fainting.
Iron is distributed at a high level in red meat – but many doctors have been advising that people reduce their consumption of this group of foods to minimize their chances of developing colorectal cancer.
As per the experts, a diet containing too much iron has been leading to build-up- possibly because it accumulates in the liver and becomes damaging, DailyMail reported.
Research has linked a diet too high in iron to cancer – suggesting that it might build up in the liver and become toxic. On the other hand, having too little iron makes it hard for your body’s immune system to fight cancer, which could also raise your risk for the disease.
However, when it is low, it gets difficult for the body’s immune system to defeat cancer, thus increasing one’s chances of getting the disease. This is showing no mercy and has descended upon the United States, targeting some of its celebrities.
